Zeenat awaits ‘fit cert’ from Bengal vets to return to Odisha | Bhubaneswar News
Kolkata: A day after Odisha’s three-year-old tigress Zeenat was captured in Bankura, West Bengal formed a medical team to monitor the big cat. It has been transported to Kolkata’s Alipore zoo.
The tigress, weighing over 136 kg, was transferred to a squeeze cage on Monday evening for blood and stool sample collection. It will be examined for presence of viruses or parasites as it has dwelt in human-dominated terrain and consumed domestic livestock.
Sources said she can return to Odisha’s Similipal Tiger Reserve only after a ‘fit certificate‘ from vets. However, chief wildlife warden Debal Roy did not give a potential date for her return.
“We are doing intravenous hydration for the tigress. We offered her chicken, but she didn’t have it,” Roy said. “Sunday’s operation was taxing. Hence, she requires rest. Zeenat is perfectly healthy and upon reaching the zoo she even roared,” he added.
Prakash Gogineni, field director, Similipal Tiger Reserve, said, “We have sent a letter to Bengal chief wildlife warden requesting authorisation for Zeenat’s transfer to Similipal.” The big cat was relocated to Similipal from Maharashtra’s Tadoba under a translocation programme.
