Yoga Instructors: Call for more yoga instructors in jails |

Berhampur: Yoga teachers have urged the state govt to appoint regular yoga instructors in major prisons to train inmates to reduce stress and to prevent from returning to a life of crime.
“There are several instances of jail inmates, who regularly practised yoga, becoming teachers after being released from prison,” said a yoga teacher.
“They can maintain peace of mind and will hesitate from going back to life of crime after practising yoga,” said P K Rath, a yoga instructor on the occasion of International Yoga Day, which was observed at the circle jail here and rest of the country, on Friday.
“The practice of yoga, especially among prison inmates, transforms their lives,” said Durga Kumar Layak, who became a yoga instructor after being released from jail. He was jailed in a murder case about 12 years ago. He was involved in at least 10 criminal cases, including murder, and jailed from 2009 to 2013.
“I regularly attended yoga sessions in prison. After being released, I continued yoga practice regularly. I also completed a one-year course from Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari in 2018. Then I taught yoga in a private institute till Feb 2022,” he said.
