Berhampur: A 38-year-old woman on Tuesday was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in Ganjam district for killing her son over a family dispute.
The incident took place on Oct 27, 2023. The convict, identified as S Gangsamma, pushed her eight-year-old son, who was returning home from a coaching class, into a pond near her residence at Bijipur under Town police station limits in Berhampur. The victim was identified as S Rohit Kumar. He was rescued by the locals and taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where he was declared dead.
Police arrested the woman after registering a murder case based on a complaint by her husband, S Pappa Rao. Sources said she was in jail since her arrest.
The sentencing was pronounced by the district and sessions court after it recorded the statements of 15 witnesses and verified relevant records, public prosecutor Trilochan Parida said.
