Woman rejects former boyfriend’s marriage proposal, gets killed

Balasore: A 25-year-old woman was murdered at her home by her former boyfriend on Monday after she rejected his marriage proposal. The incident took place in Lingapada village under Soro police station limits in Balasore district. Her body was discovered by her mother, an Anganwadi worker, who had stepped out and came back to see her daughter lying unconscious with her throat slit. The victim had filed a complaint at Soro police station against the ex-boyfriend on Friday after he started threatening her when she refused to marry him. “Had the police taken proper action, my daughter’s life could have been saved,” Manoranjan Rana, the victim’s father who works as a cycle mechanic, said.
Balasore SP Raj Prasad said their investigation on the matter was already underway when the murder took place. “Three teams have been formed and they are conducting raids at various locations to apprehend the accused, (who is absconding at the moment). A case has been registered in this connection and a post-mortem has been conducted. Further investigation with the assistance of a forensic team is underway,” the SP added.
The victim was identified as Jyotirmayee Rana of Lingapada village and the accused as Biswaranjan Puhan (25) of Bhairabpur village under Basudevpur police station limits in Bhadrak district.
Reports said the two fell in love while studying at Upendra Nath College in Soro. They later started working together in Bengaluru where Jyotirmayee was employed as a supervisor at a security provider company, while Biswaranjan worked as a delivery boy at a food aggregator company. “They were in a relationship for a long time but the woman ended it over his alcohol addiction,” the SP said.
Later, Jyotirmayee came back to Odisha and started working in a private firm in Bhubaneswar, while Biswaranjan quit his job and returned to his village. Two months ago, she came to her village on leave and Biswaranjan started harassing her.
On Monday, she was alone at home when the accused killed her. “I went to the Anganwadi centre around 10:50am and when I returned home, I found her with her throat slit,” Tulasi Rana, the victim’s mother, said. She was immediately taken to the hospital where she was declared dead.
