Woman cop kills self in Balasore police barracks

Balasore: A woman constable allegedly died by suicide inside a police barrack in Balasore district on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Jashoda Das (23) of Mandarpur village under Remuna police station limits.
Born into a farmer family, Jashoda was the second of three children and was serving at the Balasore Reserve Police Office.
Sources said Jashoda, who joined the service in 2023, was alone in the barrack on Tuesday morning after others left for work. Around 8 am, her colleagues discovered her hanging in her room with a scarf tied around her neck. They took her to Balasore district headquarters hospital, where doctors declared her ‘brought dead’.
It is believed that Jashoda was under mental distress, apparently linked to personal issues. Her recent online status read, “In search of gold, lost diamond,” which has drawn attention of investigators. While no suicide note was recovered, preliminary inquiries suggest that emotional or relationship issues may have led to the suicide.
“We learned of her death at the hospital. She was in a relationship, and it seems that emotional turmoil may have driven her to take this step. The truth will be clearer once her phone and messages are examined,” said her brother, Tutu Das.
Sources indicate that Jashoda had been in a relationship with a youth from Soro area, who is reportedly in the police force. The nature of their relationship and any recent developments are currently under police scrutiny.
Superintendent of police (Balasore) Raj Prasad said, “We are investigating the incident. Initial findings suggest personal reasons may be behind this tragedy. She appeared to be mentally distressed, but the exact cause will be confirmed after a detailed inquiry.”
A case has been registered at Sahadevkhunta police station. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and a formal investigation is underway. Police officials have assured that all possible angles — both personal and professional — will be thoroughly examined.
