'When same joke is cracked repeatedly, nobody laughs': Devendra Fadnavis hits back at Rahul Gandhi over voter list charge

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of discrepancies in the state’s voter list, attributing them to the Congress party’s anticipated defeat in the Delhi assembly elections.
Speaking in Nagpur, the senior BJP leader remarked that the leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha should focus on his party’s internal issues rather than making baseless claims.
“Rahul Gandhi is trying to create a distraction as the Congress braces for a significant loss in the Delhi polls,” he stated.

In a tweet, Fadnavis wrote, “When the same joke is told over and over again, you don’t laugh at it!”
His comments came after the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP) alleged large-scale additions to Maharashtra’s electoral rolls.
The Delhi assembly poll results, from voting held on February 5, are set to be declared on February 8 (Saturday).
During a press conference in New Delhi, Gandhi claimed that 39 lakh voters were added to Maharashtra’s list between the 2024 Lok Sabha and assembly elections, held just six months apart.
He argued that this surge was comparable to the entire population of Himachal Pradesh and urged the Election Commission (EC) to disclose a detailed voter list to clarify the matter.
Fadnavis dismissed the accusations, asserting that the EC had already provided sufficient explanations for the increase in registered voters.
