‘Waste of your time and public resources’: Kunal Kamra after Mumbai Police visit his Mahim house | Mumbai News – The Times of India

MUMBAI: Khar police on Monday visited stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra‘s Mahim home to find out if he was present there, to which he responded by posting a message on X saying it was a waste of time.
Meanwhile, police have begun recording statements of some of the people who attended Kamra’s show ‘Naya Bharat‘ on Feb 2 at Habitat Studio. Police are investigating his alleged remarks about Maharashtra deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde in the show.
Police also served notices to audience members under CRPC Section 179, which authorises police officers to summon witnesses for investigation. IPS officer-turned-lawyer YP Singh said police have the authority to summon one or two attendees from the show to record their witness statements.
He emphasised that calling spectators is not mandatory since electronic evidence already exists in the case. Additionally, he pointed out that the case lacks severity as the show was conducted within the bounds of freedom of speech.
At 7.30pm on Monday, Kamra posted on X: “Going to an address where I haven’t lived for the last 10 Years is a waste of your time & public resources…”
This statement followed the police visit to his parents’ Mahim residence, as he now resides in Puducherry.
The notices issued to Kamra on March 25 and 26 required him to appear at Khar police station regarding his controversial remarks about Shinde. He did not appear, as the Madras High Court granted him interim bail until April 7.
A Khar police officer confirmed that no additional notices have been issued to Kamra, and neither he nor his legal representative has contacted the police.
Separately, Shiv Sena (Shinde) office-bearer Rahool Kanal and 11 party workers reported to Khar police station on Monday, fulfilling court-ordered attendance requirements every Monday and Thursday. They face charges for allegedly damaging the Habitat Comedy Club at Unicontinental Hotel where Kamra recorded the controversial video.
Rahool Kanal later wrote on X: “He should come and face the law… No matter what protection he has there (in Tamil Nadu), whenever he comes to Mumbai, he will be welcomed in a good ‘Shiv Sena style’… It’s not a threat. Mumbai has this culture of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’, and he considers himself a guest here (in Mumbai) now… What is there to get scared of?”
