Waqf law not beneficial to Muslims, will fight against it: Owaisi

Hyderabad: AIMIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday accused BJP leaders of trying to threaten even the Supreme Court by stating that a religious war will start after the judgment by the Chief Justice of India on petitions filed against the Waqf (Amendment) Act-2025.
Addressing a public meeting ‘Desh Bachao, Samvidhaan Bachao and Waqf Bachao’ organised by All India Muslim Personal Law Board in protest against the Waqf Act 2025 at Dar us Salam grounds in the city, Owaisi said: “Where is the country going. Narendra Modi, your party leaders are trying to threaten whom? When the Supreme Court judgment on Babri Masjid did not come as expected by Muslims in their favour, we did not say a religious war will start. We respect the apex court and law of this land.”
“This is the difference between BJP, RSS people and us. Even when the court decision did not come in our favour, we accepted it because we believe in constitutional morality. But you people are anti-constitutional and propagate fake nationalism. What choice were we left with when you (BJP-led govt) made the law to snatch Muslim properties just because you had the majority. So, we went to the court seeking justice,” Owaisi, a barrister himself, said.
Now, BJP leaders were even questioning how the SC could make laws. “Modiji, if you don’t stop your people from threatening, you will be weakening India and this country will not forgive you. It only shows who is more radicalised,” he said.
BJP is spreading lies that the new Waqf Act is beneficial to Muslims, especially women. “I want to tell the people that Modiji is not giving medicine through the new Waqf Act but giving the message of death to us,” he alleged.
Owasi called upon the Muslims and all secular-minded Hindus that the fight against the new Waqf Act was not to save just the Muslim land parcels, mosques, dargahs, idgahs, graveyards and other shrines, but it was mainly to show the ruling political forces and their allies that they cannot finish “our identity and our existence”. “When we did not bow down to nearly 200 years of British suppression, we will not bow down to your anti-constitutional and anti-fundamental rights law,” he said.
The AIMIM president said the farmers, with their protest on Delhi borders against the three farm laws” have shown the way. “The protest against the Waqf Act-2025 will be peaceful, democratic and will continue until the black law is withdrawn. Our inspiration is the farmers’ protest,” Owaisi said.
Referring to the triple talaq (the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019) and other laws brought by the Modi govt since 2014 and now preparing to bring the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Hyderabad MP alleged that BJP is trying to destroy the beauty of the country, which is unity in diversity. Even the Hindus have realised that they will not get jobs with this new Waqf Act and by snatching the properties of Muslims. BJP is spreading only hatred and has not come out with any solution against unemployment. I want to inform my Hindu, Sikh and other religions brethren that what is good for Hindu endowments, is also good for Muslims and waqf,” Owaisi said.
The protest meeting saw BRS, YSRCP, DMK, Muslim religious leaders of almost all schools of thought and heads of dargahs and educational institutions coming on to a single platform and opposing the new Waqf Act-2025 in a unified voice.
All India Muslim personal Law Board president Moulana Khalid Saifullah Rahmani called upon the Muslims not to get misled by vested interests that the Supreme Court has delivered its judgment against the Waqf Act-2025. “The SC has provided only temporary relief and we will continue to fight until the black law is withdrawn. The incumbent govt is trying to break our unity. Don’t allow it to happen,” he said.
