Bhubaneswar: A four-year-old boy was among two killed in wall collapses caused by heavy rain in Nabarangpur and Angul districts in the last 24 hours, while over 7,300 people in 1,045 villages in Malkangiri district have been marooned.
Several bridges and roads were submerged in Malkangiri district, where 121 people were evacuated to safer places.
A four-year-old boy died in a wall collapse at Bhatipada under Chandahandi block in Nabarangpur district on Saturday.A woman in her sixties was killed in another wall collapse at Sanakerajunga village in Angul district. A rice mill and its godown collapsed due to heavy rain in Nabarangpur on Saturday night. No one was injured in the incident, sources said.
Under the influence of a depression over the Bay of Bengal, Malkangiri, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Khurda and Nayagarh districts have received heavy rainfall since Friday.
Though the depression has weakened into a low-pressure area, IMD has issued a yellow warning of heavy rain for 13 districts on Monday. Heavy rain is likely to continue across the state till Wednesday.
The special relief commissioner (SRC) has alerted all district collectors to prohibit movement of vehicles and people on submerged roads and bridges.
Local police and officials have been instructed to be present at the sites to regulate traffic.
