Vital roads to be decorated with lights for Pravasi Bharatiya Divas | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: Bhubaneswar will showcase its splendour during the forthcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas-2025, with the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) embarking upon an innovative venture to decorate vital arteries of the state capital with a distinctive “look and feel” illumination system.
The installation of aesthetic and ornamental lighting will commence on priority streets extending 7.9 km, along with the five major parks in Bhubaneswar, where the BDA will organise the Park Utsav from Jan 4 to Jan 16.
The corridors designated for this lighting system encompass Airport Square to AG Square, AG Square to Kalpana Square, AG Square to Governor House Square, and AG Square to Housing Board Square.
The BDA also intends to illuminate the stretches between Governor House Square to XIMB Square, Institute of Engineer road up to Housing Board Square, Smart Janpath, and Madhusudan Marg.
BDA officials said the project is crucial for enhancing the city’s visual appeal and fostering a dynamic, hospitable ambience for visitors during the upcoming Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2025, scheduled from Jan 8 to Jan 10.
“This endeavour not only underscores Bhubaneswar’s dedication to creating a memorable experience for delegates and visitors but also reinforces its position as a modern, culturally-rich urban centre,” said BDA vice-chairman (BDA) N. Thirumala Naik.
He said BDA is currently engaging an event management agency to devise and implement the lighting system installation across major city streets during the national event.
“Meticulously planned lighting will illuminate key urban spaces, ensuring safety, facilitating navigation, and highlighting the city’s architectural and natural splendour, harmonising with this national event’s grandeur,” said Naik.
The “look and feel” regarding colour scheme, overall aesthetic ambience, and chromatic elements utilised in the lighting system will complement the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas theme, sources said.
The BDA is organising parallel events, including Food Festival, Park Utsav, and Ekamra Walks during the grand occasion. The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation is equally committed, arranging events such as Pata Utsav and additional activities coinciding with the national event.
“Once a year at least, such events should take place. With such events, the city literally comes alive. It happened previously during the hockey world cups. This is another such moment, and we are anxiously waiting for it,” said Girija Patnaik, Bomikhal resident.
