Vikramshila Central Univ project gains momentum | Patna News – Times of India

Bhagalpur: Hectic preparations are underway for establishing Vikramshila Central University (VCU) near the ancient Vikramshila Mahavihara in Kahalgaon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone for the university in April-May next year.
Deputy CM and Samrat Chaudhary announced in Bhagalpur on Thursday that the land acquisition process was in its final stage. “The detailed project report and tender processes will conclude by April next year, paving the way for PM Modi to inaugurate the project,” Chaudhary said.
The Centre had initially allocated Rs 500 crore for VCU’s development in 2015, but the project stalled for nearly a decade. The renewed announcement has sparked excitement among locals. Members of the Kendriya Vishwavidyalaya Nirman Samiti (KVNS), who have long campaigned for the university, have expressed their delight.
A team from the School of Planning and Architecture under the ministry of education recently visited VM’s excavation site and surveyed 205 acres in Malakpur and Antichak villages. Of this, 177 acres are being acquired from local landowners. The feasibility studies have already been submitted to central and state govts.
“The proposal is being pursued actively and we foresee no hurdles in establishing the university,” Bhagalpur DM Nawal Kishor Choudhary said.
Vikramshila Mahavihara, established by King Dharampala (783-820 AD) during the Pala Dynasty, was a renowned centre of Buddhist and tantric learning. Historians, local leaders and JD(U) MP Ajay Kumar Mandal believe the university would restore its ancient glory and benefit regional students.
“The VCU at Kahalgaon will rekindle the legacy of Vikramshila Mahavihara and contribute immensely to education,” said KVNS convenor Pawan Kumar Choudhary.
