Vehicle owners urged to update contact info to avoid fines | Patna News – Times of India
Patna: The state transport department is planning to launch a crackdown on the vehicle owners if they fail to update their cellphone number and address linked to registration certificate (RC) of the vehicles and driving licence, under the relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The department issued guidelines in this regard to all the district transport officers on Saturday.
Department’s secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal appealed to the people to update their cellphone number linked to vehicle registration and driving licence within a month.“If the vehicle and driving licence data is not updated on Sarathi and Vahan (the govt’s web-based databases), then action will be taken against the driver concerned and vehicle owner. Fine will be collected from such vehicle owners and action can be taken to cancel the registration of the vehicle concerned and the driving licence of the driver,” he said.
According to Section 49 of the MV Act, if the vehicle owner changes their residence recorded in the RC, then information about their new address has to be provided to the competent authority within 30 days. There is a provision for action against its violation as per rules. The department also issued the helpdesk number—0612-2547212—to answer to the queries of the vehicle owners.
The guideline said: “To update the cellphone number, the number linked to Aadhaar will have to be provided. The facility to update the number and other details is available on the Parivahan Seva portal. In case the number is not updated, the vehicle owners will not be able to get the pollution certificate of the vehicle.”
The secretary said that there are many vehicle owners and drivers whose cellphone numbers and addresses linked to RC and driving licence are incorrect and not in use. “Because of this, there is difficulty in identifying the vehicle owners in case of an accident or other incident. The drivers do not even get information about e-challan issued to them on their cellphones in case of traffic violations,” Agarwal said.

In India, vehicles often have unique registration numbers. Getting a VIP number plate involved an online process through the RTO’s e-auction system. The process included online registration, choosing an RTO, selecting and bidding for a number, and finalizing the payment. Registration fees were non-refundable, while caution money was refundable if the desired number was not obtained.
