Vasai-Virar civic body contractor Eagle Infra India booked for electricity theft; activists demand blacklisting

VASAI: A vvcmc contractor who successfully bid a 470 crore rupees contract has been booked by the Achole police station (Vasai) on May 27 for electricity theft of rupees 3,560. This power theft was noticed by an activist in the first week of May while he was on his way for his work at Sanyukt nagar, near Jhalawad garden, Nalasopra east. This is when he noticed that digging work was going on for laying of sewerage pipes. He also noticed that electricity which had been used for this activity was being taken from the small MSEB’s mini feeder pillar and was shocked to learn that they had taken this power illegally, without anyone’s consent. He immediately called the MSEB officials who reached the spot and conducted a spot panchanama. Later, they sent a letter to the Achole cops along with their panchanama report, for further inquiry. Accordingly a case was registered against Eagle Infra India the contractor. VVCMC officials of the concerned department refused to speak on this issue. Activists in Vasai have called for the blacklisting of this contractor, with immediate cancellation of his tender. Meanwhile, on May 6, the MSEB officials sent an Theft Bill to Eagle Infra India of rupees 3570 against which they made a payment. We got this FIR registered against the vvcmc contractor after continuous follow up, said Chetan Macha, Aam Aadmi Party Youth Leader, Maharashtra. This action is a result of the Aam Aadmi Party’s commitment to fight against corruption and misuse of public resources. We believe in clean governance and will continue to raise our voice against such malpractices, he added. He further stated that authorities should punish the guilty. Congress leader from Vasai, Kuldeep vartak said that, “Once a contractor has been found involved in any criminal activity then not only should his tender be cancelled but the firm should also be blacklisted. It’s been more than a week that an FIR has been filed in this case and still there is no action taken from the vvcmc, which reeks of corruption”. VVCMC commissioner and administrator Anil kumar Pawar said that he will look into the details of this case. In early March, a labourer had died in Virar east at the site where Eagle Infra India was doing digging work related to laying of sewer lines. Dhena Hansdak,47yrs, died in the pit dug, after the pile of soil collapsed on him, burying him on the site. Heavy machinery like JCB was used to remove the mud and pull out Dhena, who was motionless as per the eye witness.
