Two-storey swanky vending zone coming up in Patna | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: Over 200 roadside vendors of Kadamkuan area of the city will soon get a permanent place to sell their goods. Developed on the lines of a mart, a two-storey swanky ‘vending zone’, being built at the old vegetable market in Kadamkuan (ward no. 38), with different compartments for shops, will not only have seating arrangements for the vendors but basic amenities too. Its work is likely to be completed by February 2025, said an official.
The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has prepared a list of vendors who would get a place in the zone.
The officials said a permanent facility for vendors can be a one-stop solution for problems related to street vending, and residents can purchase a variety of fresh produce, including fruits and vegetables, along with fish, mutton, chicken and additional items, all conveniently located under one roof.
Ashish Kumar Sinha, councillor of ward no. 38, said the civil work on the G+1 building is complete, and the finishing work is going on, which is likely to be completed within the next couple of months. “Around 70% of shops in the building have been readied, and the allotment process to vendors has also started. Finishing work like flooring, partition and plaster is ongoing, and it will likely be completed by February 2025,” he said.
The vending zone is being built by the PMC in an area of over 11,000 sq feet at the cost of Rs 2 crore. The zone will be equipped with essential infrastructure, including waste management system, adequate parking facilities, proper ventilation, and sewerage connections, with a strong emphasis on maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards.
The facility will be enhanced with landscaping and greenery.
“The vendors and hawkers will be accommodated in designated permanent shops, addressing the problems of road encroachment and traffic congestion caused by street vending activities. The buyers will no longer have to park their vehicles haphazardly on the road as adequate parking space will be available at the vending zone. More than 100 vehicles can be parked at a time,” Sinha told this reporter on Monday.
Patna mayor Sita Sahu said street vendors possessing cards issued by the PMC would be allocated designated spaces at the upcoming vending facility. “The rental charges are yet to be finalised. Modern vegetable retail outlets, featuring organised products’ display, will be set up. Separate floors will be dedicated to vegetable and non-veg food items. Waste segregation and management will be done by the PMC to maintain cleanliness at the building,” she said.
According to Sinha, the facility was earlier expected to be completed in July this year; however, due to a legal battle, the construction work was delayed. The plan was initially made in 2018.
The PMC is also planning to develop a similar vending facility at Bakri Bazaar near Patna Junction and 26 vending spaces at different places across the city.
