Patna: The bodies of two minor cousins were fished out of a water-filled pit in Sukhpur village of Supaul district on Wednesday morning.
According to police, Satyam Kumar (10) and Soni Kumari (12) went missing after they had left their homes at Sukhpur village on Tuesday morning to graze goats.
Satyam was a Class I student at a village primary school.Soni was the third among five sisters. Their bodies were sent to the district hospital for postmortem.
Station house officer (SHO) of Supaul (Sadar) police station Arun Kumar said, “As the children did not turn up at their respective houses, the family members and relatives launched a search party for the duo. Failing to trace them, they lodged a missing persons report late on Tuesday evening.”
He added that on Wednesday morning, a watchman of a mango orchard spotted the bodies in the water-filled pit about a kilometre away from their houses and informed the family members and the police.
Meanwhile, the family members of the cousins accused the watchman of killing the minors and throwing the bodies in the pit for plucking mangoes from the farm.
The SHO said that the police have started to investigate the case from all angles. “The actual cause of the death will be known once the medical report comes,” Kumar said, adding that prima facie, it appears that during the goat grazing, kids might have started playing in the water-filled pit and drowned.
