Two drown in Mahanadi at Jobra

Cuttack: A tragic incident claimed two lives, including that of a minor, when they drowned while bathing in the Mahanadi at Jobra barrage Thursday afternoon.
The victims were identified as Sai Behera (14) and Pinkunu Jena (22), both residents of Nadikula Sahi, Jobra. According to police reports, the incident took place around 1:30 pm when one of them slipped into deep water, and the other attempted to rescue him. Both were swept away by the river’s strong current.
Following alerts from locals, Odisha Fire Services and police personnel launched an immediate rescue operation. “We received the information at 1:42 pm and rushed to the spot. Despite the challenging conditions, our fire-fighters managed to retrieve both victims after a 35-minute operation,” said city fire officer Sanjib Behera. The victims were rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared them “brought dead”.
“It is an unfortunate loss. We urge people to avoid venturing into deep waters, especially in areas with strong river currents,” said DCP Cuttack, Khilari Rishikesh. He confirmed that post-mortem examinations were conducted and the bodies were handed over to family members.
The incident has left the local community in shock. Police have initiated an inquiry and are considering additional safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
