Two die after inhaling gas from septic tank in G’ganj

Patna: Two persons, including owner of a house and a worker, lost their lives while another fell unconscious after inhaling toxic gas emanating from a septic tank under construction in Phulwaria village under Manjha police station area in Gopalganj district on Friday.
The deceased have been identified as Sudhir Dubey (37), owner of the house, from Phulwaria village and worker Shamshad Mian (40) from Kotwa village in Barauli police station area, police said.
“Dubey had called worker Shamshad to open the shuttering of his newly constructed septic tank. As soon as Shamshad opened the shuttering, he fell unconscious from the gas coming out from the tank. Soon Dubey tried to rescue him, but he also fell into the tank after inhaling the gas. Both died on the spot,” said Sangram Singh, SHO of Manjhagarh police station.
Some children standing nearby raised an alarm after which, Dubey’s relative Pundeep (35) entered the tank using a ladder to try to save them, but he also fell unconscious. “Upon receiving the information, local people assembled there. They called an ambulance and released oxygen from the ambulance into the tank, which saved Pundeep’s life. About 40 minutes later, an earthmover was called which broke the tank open and retrieved the bodies,” he said.
The SHO said Pundeep is safe and has returned to his home. “Dubey worked in a company abroad and had returned to home a year ago. He was constructing his house and was planning to go back abroad. He was second among three brothers. His other two brothers worked abroad. He is survived by his five-year-old son while Shamshad by three daughters and a son,” added the SHO.
