Berhampur: Two persons were arrested on Friday for killing their family members at different places in Kandhamal district, police said on Saturday. Both the incident took place when the accused were drunk, police said.
In the first incident, Pramod Chandra Bagarty (35), a mason from Kendupadar, was arrested for murdering his 15-year-old son, Abhijit Bagarty, a Class X student. On Wednesday, after killing his son, Pramod hanged the boy’s body from a fan’s clamp using a towel.
His wife, Jayanti, who was away at work, discovered the scene upon returning. She suspected her husband as he often abused them in a drunken state. “Based on the circumstantial evidence, we have arrested the accused,” said IIC, Phulbani town police station, Swaroop Kissan.
In the second incident, Saroj Digal (45), a labourer from Lamapadar village under Phiringia police limits, was arrested for killing his father, Dakesha Digal (65). On Wednesday night, after a heated argument, Saroj struck his father on the head with a hammer, killing him instantly.
The elderly man frequently advised his son to stop drinking and work. That night, when he told Saroj to go to sleep, the accused, who was drunk, reacted violently and killed his father. “The old man died on the spot,” said inspector-in charge, Phiringia police station, Gopinath Pradhan.
