Tuticorin port records new high in handling single day cargo volume

MADURAI: VOC Port in Tuticorin achieved an all-time high single-day volume by handling 2,04,650 tonne on Feb 23, 2025, surpassing the previous single-day volume of 2,04,512 tonne handled on Oct 30, 2024.
The port is well-equipped with advanced infrastructure to streamline bulk cargo handling, ensuring swift and efficient cargo movement.
Presently, two harbour mobile cranes with a capacity of handling 120 tonne are positioned at North Cargo Berth-2. Three harbour mobile cranes are at berths 1 to 5, clocking an impressive output of 45,000 tonne per day, said port authorities.
A 240-metre-long link conveyor system, connecting the conveyor of the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station with the port’s coal yard, has been operationalised to further enhance the overall bulk cargo handling capacity. This new system is expected to boost the port’s coal handling capacity by seven lakh tonne annually.
VOC Port offers an area of 3,85,136 square metre for storing coal and 1,24,309 square metre for storing limestone in the custom-bound area for stock and sale.
Recently, 1,700 square metre of berth space was created to improve truck movement and cargo storage at North Cargo Berth-2.
The port has announced concessions on wharfage for handling bulk cargo at North Cargo Berth-2 and Coal Jetty-2. The details of the concession scheme are available on the VOC Port’s website https://vocport.gov.in.
Port chairman Susanta Kumar Purohit said dredging the berth area of North Cargo Berth-3 to a draft of 14.20 metre would commence shortly. The interim bulk handling operations shall commence with the harbour mobile cranes.
The fully mechanised shore unloaders, capable of handling seven million tonne annually, shall be commissioned by JSW Infrastructure Ltd by December 2026.
