Tusker enters house, tramples 2 minor sisters to death in Sundargarh dist | Bhubaneswar News
Rourkela: Two minor siblings were trampled to death when a wild elephant entered their house while they were sleeping early on Sunday. The incident took place at Mundasahi in Kantapalli village under Tamda forest range in Sundargarh district. Later in the day, father of the deceased girls lodged an FIR at Gurundia police station.
The girls, Sania (12) and Chandini (3), were daughters of Ranjan Munda (35) and his wife Birsingh (32). Their eldest son, aged 15 years, studies at a school in Rourkela. They have another daughter, aged 8. The couple and their three daughters used to live in a hut in the village.
Around 1:30 am on Sunday, a tusker entered Mundasahi and destroyed Munda’s house. Upon seeing the tusker in the house, Munda woke up his wife and children and started running to save their. Munda, his wife, and their 8-year-old daughter narrowly escaped the tusker attack, but he couldn’t save the other two daughters.
After receiving information, officials of the Tamda forest range reached the location. On Sunday, the forest range officer of the Tamda forest range, along with other staff, arrived. The
Angry villagers blamed the forest officials for the death of the two girls and the damage caused to the house by the tusker. Although the forest range officer of Tamda assured them that, as per provision, Rs.6 lakh compensation would be given to the father of the deceased for each child, the locals refused to allow the bodies to be taken away for autopsy unless Rs 2 lakh was handed over to the father of the deceased.
The locals relented only after Rs1 lakh was given to Munda. Later, Munda lodged an FIR at Gurundia police station against the tusker attack.
Bonai MLA Laxman Munda also visited the village and spoke to the parents of the deceased and the locals. Since Munda’s house was completely damaged, the Tamda forest range shifted the family to a beat house for a temporary stay.
Lalit Kumar Patra, divisional forest officer of Bonai forest division, termed the death of the girls as tragic. “A compensation of Rs 6 lakh each for the two girls will be given to the family after the completion of necessary formalities,” said Patra, adding, “Our squad is keeping a watch on the tusker, who is now camping in a reserve forest in the area.”
