Tunnel Work: Three-fourths of tunnel work completed on new railway line: ECoR | Bhubaneswar News


Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway (ECoR) has completed construction of 9.1 km out of the 12.7-km tunnels on the Khurda Road-Balangir new line. It has targeted to complete the work by 2025-end.
All seven tunnels are located between Dasapalla station in Nayagarh district and Purunakatak station in Boudh district. This includes the state’s longest tunnel of 4.2 km between Purunakatak and Charichhak, which features a 700-metre escape tunnel for safety.

According to ECoR, these tunnels present some of the most daunting engineering challenges encountered in railway construction.Four major tunnels are in Boudh district between Adhenigarh and Purunakatak. The remaining three are in Nayagarh. “The geological complexity of the region with varying soil densities and rock formations, has posed significant difficulties in ensuring tunnel stability and safety. Advanced tunnelling techniques have been used to manage these diverse conditions, requiring meticulous planning and execution,” the official statement read.
“Of the seven tunnels, five have curves. This demands an exceptional level of precision in engineering, as curved tunnels present a unique challenge in terms of alignment and structural integrity. To speed up the work, tunnels are being built simultaneously from both ends,” said a railway officer.
ECoR has completed work on 199 km out of 301 km of the new line project. This includes 105.8 km from Khurda Road to Dasapalla and 93 km from Balangir to Boudh. “The remaining segment from Boudh to Purunakatak is on track for completion within the next few months,” read the official statement.

These projects aim at easing traffic woes and beautifying the city.
