Trouble mounts for Kunal Kamra as Mumbai Police register 3 cases against comedian | Mumbai News – The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Three cases have been registered against comedian Kunal Kamra at Khar Police Station, Mumbai, news agency ANI reported on Saturday. Among the complainants is the Mayor of Jalgaon city, while a hotelier and a businessman from Nashik have also filed cases against him.
According to Mumbai Police, Kamra has been summoned twice for questioning but has not appeared yet. The investigation into the complaints is ongoing.
‘Granted anticipatory bail’
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court on Friday granted Kamra anticipatory bail after he moved the court citing concerns over his safety. In his plea, he stated that although he was born in Mumbai, he relocated to Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, in 2021 to lead a quieter life.
Granting relief, Justice Sunder Mohan said, “This court is inclined to grant anticipatory bail till April 7. He shall execute a bond to the satisfaction of the Vanur judicial magistrate’s court.” The judge also noted that Kamra had sufficiently explained why he could not approach a court in Maharashtra immediately.
Kamra’s counsel, V. Suresh, informed the court that the allegations against him stemmed from remarks made during his stand-up comedy show, “Naya Bharat.” He argued that the accusations did not warrant custodial interrogation and that Kamra had been unable to seek anticipatory bail in Maharashtra due to security concerns.
The comedian’s lawyer also claimed that Kamra had received threats from ruling party members and Maharashtra ministers. His Mumbai-based lawyer, Ashwin Thool, joined the hearing virtually from Mumbai.
Although the FIR was registered in Khar, Kamra approached the Madras High Court as he currently resides within its jurisdiction. His counsel emphasized his fears of “actual physical bodily harm and threats to his life and liberty in the event of his arrest by Mumbai Police, a threat chillingly made in public by political party cadres.”
