Trees Felled: More than 100 trees felled to widen 6km stretch in Gajapati district | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: In Gajapati district, authorities have cut down more than 100 fully grown trees of various species along the approximately 6km stretch of road from Khajuripada to Nuagada to widen it, triggering outrage among environmentalists, who argued that the trees could have been relocated.
The public works department is carrying out the Rs 7.66-crore road project with an August 2024 deadline.
SK Samal, superintendent engineer of PWD’s Paralakhemundi division, said, “We have cut the trees after taking necessary permission from the forest department.”
A joint survey conducted by forest and PWD personnel resulted in the forest department granting permission to fell 103 trees along the roadside. The divisional forest officer of Paralakhemundi, Sudarshan S, said permission was granted on the condition that compensatory plantation would be carried out near Paralakhemundi.
Locals and environmentalists have expressed concern over the felling of trees, arguing that it will not only reduce the green cover but also destroy the habitat of numerous birds and reptiles.
