Train runs over 2 women in Ganjam | Bhubaneswar News



Berhampur: Two women were crushed to death when they fell on the tracks while they were trying to board a train from the wrong side at Surla Road station in Ganjam district on Sunday morning. The two slipped while trying to board the Palasa-Cuttack DMU train and fell on the tracks and were run over by a train coming from the opposite direction.
The two women worked as a pachika’s (cook) helpers in the midday meal scheme at a school in their village, Jagannathpur, under K Nuagaon police station limits. They were identified as Parbati Gouda (60), a widow, and Jhunu Gouda (55) who was not married.
The two, along with several others in the area, were going to Bhubaneswar to attend a meeting of the Pachika Sahayika Mahasangh when the accident took place.
Govt Railway Police (GRP) here suspect that Parbati lost her balance and fell on the tracks and Jhunu slipped while trying to hold onto her hand.
“We have registered two unnatural death cases and started an inquiry,” Bikash Polai, officer in-charge, GRP Berhampur, said. Both bodies were handed over to their relatives after conducting a post-mortem examination at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.
Sukant Gouda, one of the relatives of the deceased, said he dropped the two women at Pitatali on his motorcycle around 4 am. From Pitatali, the victims, along with some others, went to Surla station to board the Palasa-Cuttack DMU. “I was shocked after I came to know that both of them died,” Sukant added.
