Kendrapada: Minister of state for home Nityanand Rai informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that 30 people lost their lives in Odisha due to hydro-meteorological disasters in the current 2024-25 fiscal year.
According to the minister’s response to a question by MP Selvaraj V, natural disasters also resulted in two cattle deaths, damage to 1,941 houses, and affected 0.22 lakh hectares of agricultural land.
Rai emphasised that state govts bear primary responsibility for disaster management and ground-level relief distribution, as per the National Policy on Disaster Management (NPDM). States can access the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for immediate relief measures, following govt-approved guidelines.
“The central govt provides additional support through logistics and financial assistance,” Rai said. “In cases of ‘severe nature’ disasters, further aid is released from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) following assessment by inter-ministerial central teams (IMCTs),” he added.
Till Nov 27, the govt has deployed 12 IMCTs to assess natural calamity damages across multiple states, including Odisha, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram, Kerala, Nagaland, Tripura, Gujarat, Telangana, West Bengal, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh.
The minister added that IMCT reports undergo evaluation by the central govt following established procedures before determining additional assistance.
