Villager killed, 2 forest officials hurt in elephant attack

Balangir: A 40-year-old man was killed and two forest officials were critically injured in an elephant attack near Bandhanpali village in Balangir district on Sunday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Rupesh Chatria of Degaon village.
The incident occurred around 4:30 pm, when a forest patrol team was tracking the tusker’s movements. The tusker, which had been roaming the area for the past 20 days, charged unexpectedly at the patrol team before encountering Chatria, who was unaware of its presence.
Critically injured Chatria and two forest officials were initially rushed to Turekela hospital. They were later transferred to Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Balangir as their condition deteriorated. Chatria succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Forest officials said the deceased’s family will receive Rs 6 lakh as compensation, with Rs 60,000 already deposited in his wife’s account for funeral expenses.
