Chennai: To shield traffic cops from the intense summer heat, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) distributed sunglasses to the traffic cops. Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun handed over the sunglasses to the 1,500 traffic cops on Wednesday at Vepery. Each pair of sunglasses costs Rs 1,990, and the entire initiative was funded with an allocation of Rs 29.85 lakh.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) R Sudhakar and other senior police officials were present. Previously, the city police distributed pith hats to help the officers shield themselves from the sun.
Police will also distribute buttermilk to cops twice daily to keep them hydrated. An official release from the GCP said that Rs 30,789 is spent on buttermilk daily, which is distributed to 4,864 policemen. Over the course of 120 days, the total cost of the buttermilk initiative is expected to be Rs 37.56 lakh.
