Three years later, Korukkupet subway still hassles commuters | Chennai News – Times of India

Chennai: Nearly three years after a foundation stone was laid in 2022, the Korukkupet subway connecting vehicles with the Mint flyover remains unfinished. Thousands of residents are forced to endure daily detours, traffic snarls, and walk past dug-up roads.Planned as a 150m 20-crore underpass beneath the Korukkupet railway tracks, the project was intended to ease congestion and provide an alternative to the lone railway level crossing in the area. It was supposed to connect Bojarajan Nagar with Kannan Street, which ends just beneath the Mint flyover. However, work is still ongoing.Kannan Street, which connects Korukkupet to the Mint flyover, has been shut for more than a year, forcing commuters to take a 2km detour via Old Washermenpet and Thiruvottiyur High Road. MTC buses also stopped entering the area, with the Korukkupet bus terminus temporarily shifted near the Mint flyover. Residents walk at least 400m to board the bus.Deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar said there’s a delay in the railway portion of work. “The IOC oil pipeline, sewage, and underground EB lines needed to be shifted without any hindrance to the IOC and the public. Most of it is completed. We plan to complete the work by Aug,” he said. The underpass with entry and exit has been dug up and constructed, with only roads needing to be relaid. Earlier, HR&CE minister P K Sekarbabu also inspected the site after a hundred residents protested. When TOI visited the spot on Thursday, there was just piled-up earth, and residents were made to walk on narrow pavements.Ward 42 councillor M Renuka said she also wrote to RK Nagar MLA asking for the status of the project. “My ward residents are affected as they cannot board buses to Tambaram and Vivekananda House. GCC and railways must speed up work,” she said.Once constructed, around 10,000 vehicles a day will pass through the subway.
