Chennai: Three musical instruments — Thanjavur veenai and Narasingampettai nadaswaram and Manamadurai pottery (ghatam) — from Tamil Nadu will have a pride of place at the Bharath Mandapam in New Delhi, on April 26 when the nation observes the World Intellectual Property Day.
A total of 18 musical instruments which have been conferred the GI status so far will be reintroduced and paraded on the occasion.

The department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) under the Union ministry of commerce and industry is celebrating World Intellectual Property Day, themed “IP and Music”.
Union minister for commerce and industries Piyush Goel will hand over certificates and commendations recognising the contributions of artisans in getting the prestigious recognition for the traditional musical instruments, said IPR attorney P Sanjai Gandhi, who is the designated nodal officer for GI registered products of Tamil Nadu,
While Manamadurai pottery (Ghatam) was given the GI tag in Nov 2022, nearly two years after the GI application was filed, Thanjavur veenai got it in 2014, though the application was filed in 2011. As for the Narasingampettai nadaswaram, the application was filed in 2014, and the GI tag was given after eight years, in 2022.
During the IP Day event on Saturday, minister Piyush Goel is set to hand over GI certificates for eight products — Thovalai Maanika Maalai, Kumbakonam Vetrilai, Panruti Palappazham, Panruti Cashew, Puliyankudi Acid Lime, Virudhunagar Sambha Vathal, Chettikulam Small Onion, Ramanadu Chithiraikar Rice – from Tamil Nadu to the applicants/registered proprietors.
The World IP Day has been observed every year since 2000 to mark the inception of the WIPO Convention in 1970 with an aim to increase general understanding of intellectual property. The first year’s theme in 2001 was Creating the Future Today, highlighting the vital role of innovators and artists in societal development. This year’s theme is “IP and music: Feel the beat of IP.” This year’s aim is to celebrate the universal language of music and highlights how intellectual property (IP) rights support the vibrant and diverse music landscape.
Among the annual themes were Women and IP, Youth and IP, IP and SMEs.
