Mumbai: Three men were arrested by North Region Cyber Police for having duped a Goregaon resident of Rs 2.77 crore in an investment fraud. Police said the bank accounts used by the accused have been named in 28 other criminal offences across the country. The accused used these bank accounts for frauds to the tune of Rs 18 crore.
The 49-year-old complainant from Goregaon had clicked a link received through social media and found his WhatsApp number being added to a WhatsApp group called K05-IIFL Securities Ltd. The admin and members of the group discussed tips to earn heavy returns through share trading.
The complainant was lured into downloading a bogus share trading app, after he was convinced that he would earn good returns. He was offered attractive trading schemes in IPOs, block trading etc., and he invested Rs 2.77 crore totally. But when he wanted to withdraw his money, the accused gave various pretexts. They told him that he would have to pay a hefty tax for withdrawal and that his credit score would reduce. Eventually, the complainant realised he had been taken for a ride and lodged a complaint with North Region Cyber Police.
During investigations, a team supervised by DCP Datta Nalawade found that about Rs 71 lakh had been transferred by the complainant into the bank account of one Rudra Enterprises. Police team obtained the details of this bank account and learnt that it had been opened by one Rushak Shirodkar, 38, with the intention of receiving defrauded sums. His accomplice, Krishna Gawli, 24, took documentation and logins related to this account and gave them to another aide, Sohail Shaikh, alias Jack, 30. All three have been arrested. Four cellphones, cheques and debit cards have been seized.
The police team involved in the detection comprised senior inspector Suvarna Shinde, inspector Kiran Aher, assistant inspector Sandeep Pachangne and sub inspector Dhanvesh Patil.
