Tension in Khammam town after altercation at Tiranga rally

Hyderabad: A tense situation prevailed in Khammam town on Tuesday following an incident in which two groups of people got into an altercation when the BJP took out a rally to celebrate the success of the Army’s ‘Operation Sindoor‘ against Pakistan. The problem arose on Monday afternoon when two people on a motorcycle were stopped by a constable to allow the ‘Tiranga rally’ organised by BJP to pass. The youths reportedly got into an altercation with the police, saying they were in a hurry and should not be stopped. Some people from the rally also got into an argument with the youths on the motorbike, who refused to wait for the rally to pass.On Monday night, police used a lathi charge to disperse the crowd near the Two Town police station after some people from both groups were taken to the police station. There were no incidents overnight and the situation in the town remained peaceful on Tuesday. Khammam police commissioner (CP) Sunil Dutt said, “During a Tiranga rally organised by BJP in Khammam, two youths from another community were riding a motorcycle from ZP Centre towards Khanapur Haveli. At Yelandu X Roads, a traffic constable stopped them and informed them that the rally was underway and they would have to wait.” The commissioner said the youths questioned why they had to wait, as they had some urgent work to do and wanted to proceed. They also argued with the police officer. Meanwhile, some people at the rally supported the constable and got into an argument with the youths. This led to a physical altercation and the youth were physically pushed, said Dutt. The police arrived at the scene and took both the youths and the BJP workers involved in the incident to the Two Town police station. The CP said that two separate cases have been registered against the two groups. “The police are investigating the matter. Both groups have been asked to maintain law and order,” he said. On Tuesday, senior police officials in Khammam town warned the public against spreading rumours or false information about the incident on social media. The police said social media was being monitored and cases under non-bailable sections would be registered against those found to have made inflammatory posts. The commissioner urged the people not to believe in any rumours about the incident and those found spreading false news and rumours would face legal action as per the law.
