Hyderabad: To address the growing waste management challenges in the city and alleviate the workload of current Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) staff, the state govt has accorded permission for engaging as many as 1,578 additional sanitation workers.
However, the wages, stipulated at 15,600 per month, are not as per the prevailing system of engaging workers. At present, GHMC has around 18,000 sanitation workers employed on an outsourcing basis.
“In order to maintain uniformity in the method of hiring and wage payment to sanitation workers, a letter has been sent to the govt to issue revised orders. Action will be taken soon after getting approval from the govt,” said an official in the GHMC sanitation wing.
Meanwhile, all the commercial establishments are being instructed to instal twin garbage bins to control littering on the roads. In addition, penalties are being levied daily on defaulters for unauthorized garbage and debris dumping in GHMC limits, GHMC officials said.
On the other hand, there are over 4,000 vacancies in various wings of GHMC. The number of outsourced personnel in various departments, including sanitation, entomology, veterinary, horticulture, and transport, stands at over 25,000.
