Hyderabad: Telangana legislative affairs minister D Sridhar Babu on Monday said the state govt will not touch even an inch of the land belonging to the Hyderabad Central University (HCU).
He assured all stakeholders from the floor of the assembly that the govt will not touch the two lakes (Peacock Lake & Buffalo Lake) and the rock formations, over which students have raised concerns.
“The opposition has created a perception that the govt is eyeing the university land, which is not true,” Sridhar Babu said in the assembly. “Some vested interests are spreading rumours. The govt has even made it clear to the vice-chancellor and the registrar of HCU that their land will not be taken.” The minister was responding to AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi’s queries about students being worried over the fate of the varsity land and running a campaign on social media.
Akbaruddin referred to the Congress govt’s plan to auction 400 acres of Kancha Gachibowli land. The joint action committee of the university also wrote to AICC leader Rahul Gandhi to stop the Congress govt in the state from auctioning the university land.
The IT minister said even he and deputy chief minister Bhatti Vikramarka are alumni of the university. The land in contention does not belong to the university. “I assure, on behalf of the chief minister, that the university land, two lakes, and rocks will not be touched. The Congress govt is serious about safeguarding every inch of the university land,” he said.
Further clarifying the concerns raised by Akbaruddin that HYDRAA and Musi rejuvenation projects were the main reasons for a slump in real estate in and around the city, minister Sridhar Babu said HYDRAA was a huge success.
“The poor and middle-class sections are queuing up to submit petitions to HYDRAA. Petitions against encroachments have been received through Prajavani and other platforms too. As many as 9,078 petitions have been submitted to HYDRAA, of which 7,249 were disposed of, rendering justice to the petitioners. There is no link between HYDRAA and a slump in real estate. I can provide statistics that real estate is down even in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and other cities,” the IT minister said.
On his part, Akbaruddin said the govt should come out with a summer contingency plan for areas in the city where there is no drinking water supply. There is a huge problem of drinking water in the city and irrigation water to crops in the state. “The Congress govt should implement all its promises and spend the budget allocated to minorities’ welfare. The AIMIM is standing with the ruling Congress to stop divisive forces from coming to power. But if the Congress govt does not implement its numerous promises, the AIMIM will not accept it,” he said.
