Tejashwi’s wife delivers in Kolkata, sparks debate on state’s healthcare system

Patna: The decision of opposition leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav to have his wife admitted to a Kolkata hospital for childbirth has sparked debate over the state of healthcare in Bihar—raising questions about the healthcare system in Bihar. The NDA govt claims to have significantly transformed health sector since CM Nitish Kumar assumed office in 2005.Tejashwi’s wife, Rajshree Yadav, was in Kolkata during her pregnancy for the past nine months. She delivered a baby boy on Tuesday at a private hospital and was blessed by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. State secretary of IMA, Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, said decisions by leaders’ families to opt for hospitals outside Bihar are eroding the confidence of common patients in state-run hospitals. “The health facilities in the state are very good, and Bihar has quality doctors. Still, if people go outside the state for normal delivery, then it is very shocking,” Singh said.“I don’t know why she (Rajshree) got admitted to a Kolkata hospital, but this has indirectly left a message among the common people that the health facilities in Bihar are very alarming… this is conveying a message that ‘yahan ki vyavastha thik nahin hai,'” he added.Former IMA President Ajay Kumar said political leaders are supposed to set an example for the society. “Instead, their acts have raised a question mark over the state of health facilities in the state,” Kumar said, adding the state had every facility available here. “But the political leaders are acting like kings,” he alleged. However, a source close to the Lalu family said she was shifted to Kolkata, apprehending a large crowd could visit the hospital in Patna. Moreover, Tejashwi’s in-laws stay in Kolkata, sources said.
