Teen swimmer also fell in river with teacher, saved

Kalyan: Five days after a teacher of a Kalyan school drowned during a river rafting tragedy in Indonesia on Friday, the mother of a class 7 student, who had joined the trip, said her daughter also went overboard, but was saved. The girl, Kiana Ingole (13), is a swimmer, which helped, said her mother, Vanessa. She alleged that the tour operator and a team from BK Birla School that reached Bali “did not help the girl who is in mental trauma”. The girl’s father, Gaurav, reached Bali and took her to hospital a day later, said the mother. The school sought time to investigate concerns raised by the girl’s family. “…the school is facing significant emotional distress and administrative challenges related to repatriation of the mortal remains of teacher, Shweta Pathak, to India…,” it said. The tour operator too sought time to investigate.Seventeen students of classes 7 to 10 and two teachers went on the trip. Three children and the teacher went rafting when the teacher and the girl went overboard amid strong currents due to rains. The other two girls got to safety by holding onto the raft. Locals who saw the girl saved her, the mother said, adding: “Had she not been able to swim…” The mother said that moral support the girl should have got from the school and tour operator was not given. “Also, why were the children taken for rafting in the rain?” The girl made a video call to her parents, after which they told the school. Her father left for Bali that evening. “My daughter saw her teacher fall into the water… She was terrified,” the mother said. The father returned home with all the children.
