Tamil Nadu police to compile list of illegal recruiters to crack down on cyber slavery

Chennai: Tamil Nadu police are compiling a list of new unregistered recruitment agencies as part of the crackdown on cyber slavery. Already, 370-odd agencies have been identified and listed on the ministry of home affairs website.
The cyber crime wing, in coordination with immigration officials, is tightening surveillance at airports to screen outbound job seekers.
Statewide awareness campaigns are being launched to warn against fraudulent recruiters trafficking victims to scam hubs in Southeast Asia, an official release said.
In a meeting with the ministry of external affairs on Thursday, state police officers addressed the growing threat of educated youth being trafficked to such hubs through fake job offers.
The protector of emigrants, CB-CID, and city police have conducted joint raids, registering nine cases and arresting five illegal agents. Social media accounts used for fraudulent job advertisements are under scrutiny, with 101 blocked under the IT Act.
The state police have arrested more than 50 agents, including foreign nationals, and verified hundreds of illegal recruitment agencies.
A two-day training programme, was conducted in coordination with University of Madras between Sept and Oct 2024, equipping 130 police officers and personnel handling cyber slavery cases with enhanced investigative skills, the release said.
