Hyderabad: Telangana is set to get a second airport for commercial flights with the central govt granting approval for the development of Mamnoor airport in Warangal district. The Centre’s approval was given on Tuesday and it was announced by roads and buildings minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy on Friday.
The Mamnoor airport, which was operational during Nizam era, has been defunct for decades and earlier plans for its revival never materialised.
The permission from the Union civil aviation ministry has finally come about after taking into consideration the no-objection certificate (NOC) from GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (HIAL). The HIAL, which had a clause in its agreement that there should be no airport within 150 km aerial distance from Hyderabad for 25 years from the beginning of its operations, agreed to forego the condition after meetings with the state govt, allowing Mamnoor airport to take off.
The Telangana govt, via its letter dated Jan 15, 2025, had furnished a copy of the NOC given by HIAL on Jan 6, agreeing to a one-time waiver of exclusivity clause 5.2 of the existing concession agreement for the development of Mamnoor Airport.
In his letter to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) on Mamnoor airport, Union civil aviation secretary Amit Kumar Jha said: “The NOC is applicable only for Mamnoor airport and not to be considered as a precedent to subsequent plans to develop any other airports by the AAI or govt of Telangana and as may get covered under clause 5.2 of the concession of HIAL.”
Chief minister A Revanth Reddy on Friday said he had met civil aviation minister K Ram Mohan Naidu and urged him to expedite the approval for Mamnoor airport as the govt had already released money for land acquisition. The CM later thanked PM Narendra Modi on X.
Venkat Reddy said the work will be speeded up. In the first phase, it will cater to small aircraft for regional and inter-state operations. In the second phase, it will be operating round-the-clock international flights using large planes such as A320 and B737 and cargo planes, he added.
Roads and buildings special chief secretary Vikas Raj told TOI: “Already, collectors have completed most of the land acquisition. On our part, we will try to provide connecting roads, electricity, water supply and all facilities to make the airport commercially operational. Construction of the runway, airport terminal and air traffic control tower will be speeded up in coordination with AAI and permissions from the Director General of Civil Aviation.”
The state govt had earlier issued a GO for acquisition of 256 acres, allocating Rs 205 crore for the purpose. Mamnoor airport already possesses 696 acres.
