‘Swift action, coordinated rescue efforts saved many lives’ | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: State govt emphasised that swift action and synchronised efforts among rescue teams helped save many lives after 11 coaches of the Bengaluru-Kamakhya Superfast Express derailed near Manguli-Choudwar passenger halt in Cuttack district on Sunday.
“Authorities are on site, ensuring assistance and restoring normalcy at the earliest. Helplines were activated for support,” chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi said in a social media post.
Sources said that the chief minister’s office directly supervised the rescue and restoration activities. Emergency protocols and disaster management mechanism were activated, bringing together various agencies for the response.
Multiple rescue teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), Odisha fire and emergency service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local police worked seamlessly amid the scorching heat to assist passengers.
A senior govt official said, “We are saddened by the death of one passenger. The quick emergency response prevented further loss of life.”
Law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said, “Injured passengers were rushed to the hospital. State govt arranged separate buses to take stranded passengers to their destinations. Various departmental officials and medical teams remained present at the accident site, engaged in rescue operations. Our govt promptly made all necessary arrangements.”
Cuttack district collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde said, “We referred the injured to SCB Medical College and Hospital. They are all stable. Govt provided the passengers with all basic services.”
State govt had previously documented its extensive rescue efforts following the tripe-train tragedy at Bahanaga on June 2, 2023, which resulted in 296 deaths and left over 1,000 injured. The documentation serves as a reference for future emergency responses, detailing the organisation and implementation of the operations.
Following the 1999 Super Cyclone, disaster management became essential in training programmes for the fire service and ODRAF. Their personnel assisted in disaster response across the country, including Cyclone Hudhud in Oct 2014 in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala floods in Aug 2018, and the Meghalaya mine rescue operation in Dec 2018.
