Sundargarh Residents Demand Resumption of Discontinued Volvo Sleeper Bus Service to Puri | Bhubaneswar News
Rourkela: A recent decision by the BJP govt to stop the Volvo multi-axle sleeper bus service from Sundargarh to Puri via Rourkela has sparked outrage among residents here who have demanded for its immediate resumption. Sundargarh Sadar MLA Jogesh Singh has even threatened to protest if the service is not resumed immediately.
The Volvo multi-axle sleeper bus service from Sundargarh to Puri via Rourkela was started this year by the former BJD govt. There was a a huge demand among travellers for this bus, particularly among women, as they preferred it due to the ticket price of Re 1 per km compared to Rs 2 per km for men. The current govt decided to operate the Volvo multi-axle sleeper bus service to four major pilgrimage sites in India, which will be from Puri to Ayodhya, Tirupati, Mathura and Vrindaban. Consequently, the Volvo sleeper bus running from Sundargarh to Puri was withdrawn by the govt and taken to Puri to be engaged for running likely from Puri to Ayodhya.
The sleeper bus service from Sundargarh to Puri was stopped from Saturday, and in its place, a semi-sleeper Volvo bus was engaged for running from Sundargarh to Puri. “The decision of the state govt to stop this sleeper bus service from Sundargarh and take this bus to Puri to engage it to run to Ayodhya is really agonising for us. If the govt does not withdraw its decision, we will stage a protest in the coming days and will not allow other govt buses to operate from here,” S K Purohit, a resident of Sundargarh.
Sandhya Sahoo, a resident of Rourkela, said, “Whenever I went to Bhubaneswar or Puri, I travelled in this sleeper bus, but I came to know today that this bus is not operating from Sundargarh from Saturday.”
Sundargarh Sadar MLA Jogesh Singh has said he would press the demand before the state govt to resume the sleeper bus service from Sundargarh immediately.
Amresh Mohanty, district manager, OSRTC, Sundargarh, said a semi-sleeper bus has started running from Sundargarh to Puri via Rourkela from Saturday in place of the multi-axle sleeper bus.
According to sources, the Volvo sleeper bus will run from Sundargarh to Puri via Rourkela on alternate days after some time.
