Students Lock School Gate Demanding More Teachers | Bhubaneswar News
Kendrapada: Numerous schoolchildren and their guardians staged a dharna and locked the main gate of the 72-year-old Jayanagar Primary School in Kendrapada district’s Jayanagar village under Rajkanika block on Monday. The protesters demanded the appointment of more teachers, as the school has been operating with only one teacher for the past 11 months.
The school, which has 66 students from classes 1-5, requires five teachers. However, according to Bibhuti Bhusan Nayak, the president of the school’s managing committee, only two teachers were taking classes against the sanctioned teaching posts of five. The situation worsened when, 11 months ago, one of the teachers was promoted to the post of cluster resource centre coordinator and appointed to the block education office at Rajkanika, leading to the current agitation.
Bikram Nayak, one of the protesting guardians, expressed concern over the impact of the teaching staff shortage on the quality of education and the students’ future. “Our repeated requests to address the issue have been falling on deaf ears,” he said.
When contacted, Naliniranjan Routray, the block education officer of Rajkanika, acknowledged the situation and said, “We have informed the district education officer about their demand. The authorities will soon appoint more teachers in the school.”
