Students can now apply for UG admission before Plus II results are out

Bhubaneswar: In a significant reform of the undergraduate (UG) admission process, the higher education department will allow students to apply for courses before Plus II results are published. The new initiative marks a departure from the traditional practice of waiting for the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) results before beginning the application process.
Under the new system, students can now initiate their applications by selecting ‘appeared’ in their application forms. The department will announce specific dates for updating marks following the publication of results, ensuring a seamless transition for applicants. “For the academic session 2025-26, the UG admission process will start early, regardless of the declaration of Plus II or equivalent results,” a senior official of the department said.
The department has allocated a 10-day window post-declaration of CHSE results for applicants to upload their marks prior to seat allocation.
The reform has been particularly welcomed by educational institutes. Prasant Rout, principal of a college in Patia, emphasised that the change would enable colleges to commence Plus III classes in early July, rather than Aug or Sept. “Delays in the admission process in earlier years due to late start of applications will now be a thing of the past,” Rout said.
The department has already begun implementing these changes, with the common application form (CAF) being made available on the Student Academic Management System (SAMS) portal from Wednesday afternoon. Students have until May 20 to submit their online applications, with a two-day editing window on May 21 and 22. The response has been positive, with over 100 students applying on the first day.
For CHSE students, the process has already been streamlined as their marks will be directly fetched from the council’s database, eliminating the need for manual entry. “The comprehensive reform is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of the UG admission process and ensure a timely start to the academic year for institutes across the state,” said another official of the department.
