Student drowns during study tour in Ganjam

Berhampur: A 20-year-old Plus III final year student of PN College, Khurda, drowned while bathing in the sea at Arjipalli in Ganjam district, on Friday afternoon. The victim, Somanath Parida of Jemadei, Khurda, was part of a group of 50 students and teachers on a study tour. After visiting Dhabaleswar temple, some students went to the sea, where the incident took place.
Local fishermen rescued Parida after a search operation and rushed him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, but he was declared dead by doctors. Following a postmortem, police handed over the body to his family on Saturday.
Sudhir Kumar Paltasingh, uncle of the deceased, alleged negligence by the college authorities for the untimely death of his nephew. “Due to lack of responsibility among teachers, who accompanied the of students, my nephew died,” he alleged. He also lodged an FIR at Gopalpur police station.
“Based on his allegation, we registered a case under section 106 (death due to negligence) under BNS at Gopalpur police station. Investigation are on into the incident,” said Subhransu Parida, sub-divisional police officer (Berhampur Sadar).
