Student dies in lightning strike in Ganjam | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: Sudden rain accompanied by thunderstorms resulted in the death of a Class X student in lightning strike near Narayanpur in Ganjam district’s Patrapur block on Saturday. The deceased, Rajesh Kumar Goud, 15, was returning home from Bamakei when the mishap took place.
The showers, which lasted for four hours from 11 am to 3 pm, also caued widespread waterlogging in Berhampur, including MKCG Medical College and Hospital, inconveniening patients. Rainwater entered the OPD and girls’ hostel.
“We are de-watering the area by deploying fire-fighters,” said Sangram Panda, registrar of the medical college. Other waterlogged areas are Gandhi Nagar, Nilanachal Nagar, New bus stand, Gajapati Nagar and Braja Nagar. Drains overflowed due to the rain. “The drain water overflowed due to clogging of drains,” said S K Tripathy, a resident of Nilanchal Nagar.
Fire-fighters rescued a 54-year-old visually-challenged woman from the slum in Subudhi Colony when rain and drain water entered the area. “While others came out of their houses when the water entered, the woman could not. Our staff rescued her,” said fire officer, Berhampur, Thakur Prasad Dalei. Communication was disrupted in several areas with uprooted trees damaging the wires. Electricity poles were reportedly damaged in different areas leading to disruption in power supply.
Municipal staff and fire-fighters cleaned the roads and worked on draining out water in major areas like the medical college, said an officer of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC). A fire officer said nine teams have been deployed for the purpose. Damaged power infrastructure were repaired and supply restored in around 70 per cent of the areas, said an officer of the distribution company.
