State to decide on Ravenshaw school hostel’s heritage status: HC | Bhubaneswar News

Cuttack: Orissa high court has left it to the state govt to decide on the demand for declaring Ravenshaw Collegiate School hostel building, where Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was a boarder for four years, as a heritage site.
The Ravenshaw Collegiate School hostel ex-boarders’ association had filed a petition requesting the declaration of the hostel building as a heritage site and its preservation by converting it into a library and museum. When the matter was taken up on Jan 29, advocate Sriya S S Swain made submissions on behalf of the association. Central govt counsel S K Samantsinghar represented the Archaeological Survey of India (Bhubaneswar Circle).
Appearing on behalf of the state govt, advocate general Pitambar Acharya submitted that the hostel building is currently not in use. In response to the court’s query, he said that the govt would examine the possibility of declaring the building a heritage site, along with an inquiry to assess the structure’s safety for preservation.
Taking note of these submissions, a two-judge bench of Acting Chief Justice Arindam Sinha and Justice M S Sahoo said, “Considering the state will take steps in the matter, we dispose of the writ petition.”
Bose had spent the first 16 years of his life in Cuttack. Born on Jan 23, 1897 at Janaki Nath Bhawan, his ancestral home in Odia Bazar, Bose received his elementary education at a local school before enrolling at Ravenshaw Collegiate School, matriculating in 1913 before pursuing higher studies at Presidency College in Calcutta (now Kolkata). During his time at Ravenshaw, he stayed in the school hostel, as per father Janaki Nath’s wishes.
