State to begin NEP-based UG admissions with flexible course options | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: The higher education department on Monday announced that undergraduate (UG) admissions for the 2024-25 academic session will be implemented based on National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which will give students greater flexibility in course selection and academic pursuits.
Under the new system, students can opt for either a single major with two minor subjects, two majors with a single minor or three minor subjects. This provides them with diverse learning opportunities and broader career prospects.
The admission process will be conducted through the student academic management system (SAMS).
“The implementation of NEP-based admissions marks a significant shift in our higher education landscape,” said a senior official from the higher education department. “This flexible approach allows students to pursue their interests across different disciplines while maintaining academic rigour,” he added.
The common application form filling process will commence on Wednesday, with classes scheduled to begin by July 10. The department aims to ensure the timely completion of the academic calendar, including examinations and result declarations, so that students do not face any inconvenience.
Last year’s admission statistics showed an overwhelming response, with over three lakh applications received for 2.74 lakh seats across 1,059 institutes in the state. The department anticipates similar enthusiasm this year, particularly given the new course combinations available under NEP 2020.
The department will soon issue detailed timelines and guidelines for UG admission. Students who are Class XII graduates can apply to the UG courses. Simultaneously, the department has initiated the application process for postgraduate programs and specialised courses, including two-year B.Ed, M.Ed, and B.Hed for the 2025-26 academic year.
“This transition to NEP-based admissions represents our commitment to providing quality education aligned with contemporary needs. The new structure will help students develop multidisciplinary perspectives and enhance their employability,” the official statement added.
Official sources said students and parents can access detailed information about course combinations and the application process through the SAMS portal. They can take the help of department helpline numbers to know more about the new admission system, said a department official.
