Bhubaneswar: Odisha remains in the grip of an intense heatwave, with soaring temperatures recorded across the state. Severe heatwave conditions were reported in several districts, while Boudh, Bargarh, and Angul experienced heatwave-like conditions.
Boudh continued to be one of the hottest places in the country, recording 43.5°C on Monday. The town in western Odisha had previously logged temperatures of 43.6 °C on Sunday and 42.5°C on Saturday.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange warning for heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in several districts, cautioning residents about extreme weather over the next three days. Boudh and Jharsuguda are expected to experience severe heatwave conditions, while Balangir, Angul, and Kalahandi are likely to face heatwave conditions until Wednesday.
Relief may be on the horizon, as the IMD has forecast rain and thundershowers in districts such as Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur from Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Sundargarh and Balangir witnessed warm nights, adding to the discomfort. Although Balangir’s Agalpur recorded 3 mm of rainfall on Sunday, most regions remained dry, intensifying the heatwave’s impact.
In urban areas, Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum temperature of 36.7 °C, while Cuttack logged 37 °C on Monday. With multiple regions experiencing temperatures above 40°C, residents have been advised to take necessary precautions against the extreme heat.
“The heat has become unbearable since Mar, hinting at a far harsher summer this year. Extreme weather not only reduces productivity but also impacts businesses by slowing market sales,” said Manoranjan Sahu, a grocery store owner in the Unit-4 area.
The special relief commissioner (SRC) has urged district authorities and residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and limit outdoor activities, especially during peak hours. The state govt has also advised prioritising the safety of vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly, as the state braces for a prolonged summer with extreme weather patterns.
