State reviews, upgrades fire safety protocols in govt hospitals | Bhubaneswar News

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to enhance fire safety protocols in healthcare facilities, the state govt on Tuesday conducted a comprehensive review meeting to assess fire safety measures across govt hospitals, from community health centres to medical colleges. The high-level meeting, chaired by department secretary Aswathy S, emphasised prioritising fire safety in critical areas such as operation theatres, ICUs, special newborn care units, and sections housing high-power medical equipment, which are particularly vulnerable to electrical incidents.A key decision emerged to incorporate fire safety features in hospital building plans during the initial design phase, eliminating the need for post-construction modifications. The health secretary also stressed the importance of proper generator connections to prevent short circuits.Joint committees comprising fire officers, electrical inspectors, engineers, and health officials have been tasked with completing ground-level inspections within 15 days. They will identify safety gaps and submit detailed corrective measures with estimated plans. The govt has already allocated Rs 300 crore for implementation of fire safety measures in govt health institutions. “Necessary funds will be provided to all districts based on their corrective plans,” said Aswathy, emphasising timely completion of the assigned works.Tuesday’s review meeting also mandated the regular conduct of mock fire drills, stakeholder reviews, and consistent maintenance of safety equipment. A state-level joint team will monitor progress through field visits.Notable attendees in the meeting included Odisha State Medical Corporation managing director Pooma Tudu, and director of medical education Santosh Kumar Mishra, among other senior officials from various departments.
