State plans skill development initiative for transgender community

Bhubaneswar: To ensure equal rights for the transgender community, the govt is planning to launch a skill development training programme for them under the Sweekruti scheme.
The social security and empowerment of persons with disabilities department will coordinate the training programme for transgender persons in coordination with district-level social security officers across all 30 districts.
A high-level meeting was convened recently to finalise the modalities for the training programme. As per the discussion, transgender persons will be divided into groups of 30 to 40, and training will be provided to them in batches.
Officials said the Mission Shakti department, Odisha Livelihood Mission, and Odisha Skill Development Authority will be requested to curate the skill training programme for transgender persons, preferably skills like data entry operator and more.
“Two volunteers from the transgender community will be identified in each district to facilitate the registration of transgender persons in the national portal for issuing the TG ID-cards and certificates,” read minutes of the meeting.
“The objective is to provide self-employment opportunities to the transgender community by providing skills, and in turn, that will change the thoughts of people towards transgender persons,” said Sonia Behera, additional secretary, social security department.
