Bhubaneswar: The state govt is looking for a plot in Sambalpur to build another All-India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in Odisha and as per reliable sources, few areas, like Basantpur near the Indian Institute of Management and a plot at Majhipali, have been identified. At present, Odisha has only one AIIMS, located in Bhubaneswar which started functioning in 2013.
Chief minister Mohan Majhi had announced the establishment of an AIIMS in Sambalpur on the occasion of Nuakhai while launching the CM Kisan Yojana.State BJP had also vowed to set up an AIIMS in its manifesto during the assembly polls earlier this year.
Though the Centre has not yet given its green signal to the state govt’s proposal for a second AIIMS, authorities have asked the Sambalpur administration to be identify an area that has road, railway and air connectivity and there is availability of water. Earlier, state health minister Mukesh Mahaling had said that preparation to establish an AIIMS in Sambalpur is underway. “We are also looking into the availability of a plot for it. In the next five years, Odisha will be the best healthcare hub,” he added.
“Basantpur is being expected as there are major institutions like IIM and Sainik School nearby and it is at the periphery of Burla where VIMSAR and an engineering college are situated. Around 200 acres of land would be selected for the establishment of Odisha’s second AIIMS. People of entire western Odisha are thankful to Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradha and the CM for this,” BJP zonal spokesperson Manas Ranjan Baxy said.
For years, residents of western Odisha have been seeking access to better quality medical care, as the only AIIMS in the state, located in Bhubaneswar, is 300km away. Many patients have had to travel to Raipur, Cuttack, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, etc. for critical treatments. They often feel discouraged by the cost and distance involved.
Sources revealed that around 10,000 patients from western Odisha travel to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar and to Cuttack for treatment of diseases like cancer and diabetes, among others. “An AIIMS in Sambalpur will be a blessing for patients belonging to lower middle-class income groups,” Pakala Sika, a patient of oral cancer in Sambalpur, said.
