State cabinet okays RSS-linked coop bank for opening of govt staff’s salary accounts | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved the opening of salary accounts for govt employees at the RSS-linked Thane Janata Sahakari Bank (TJSB). Nod was also granted for the opening of accounts for govt undertakings and corporations to invest their surplus funds in the bank.
While RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat was chief guest at the bank’s golden jubilee celebrations in 2022, RSS mouthpiece Organiser had in 2013 referred to the bank as an “RSS-inspired initiative in the cooperative sector.” Organizer had then quoted RSS leader Dattatreya Hosabale as saying at the inauguration of a TJSB branch in Bengaluru that “the TJSB belongs to the Sangh family where I am coming from.”
However, bank officials refused to respond to questions on its affiliation. “We are a professional organisation with a Rs 23,000 crore business mix,” said a senior official from TJSB.
“The bank was chosen for this because it is eminently suited on the basis of its work and because it meets the criteria. Other questions are not relevant,” said BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhyay.
The TJSB is a multi-state cooperative bank founded in 1972 and has 149 branches. It reported profits worth Rs 216 crore and has deposits worth Rs 14,588 crore, according to its website.
The govt’s press release said that TJSB met the criteria of financial viability and fulfilled the criteria prescribed by RBI. The recommendation for its inclusion in the list of banks for salary accounts was made by the cooperative, textiles and marketing department. The bank has also been authorised to open personal bank accounts of pensioners.
